United States v. Mangione

Case Room — Test build · U.S. District Court, Southern District of New York · No. 1:25-cr-00176 · Judge Margaret M. Garnett

The case

Luigi Nicholas Mangione was charged in federal court in connection with the December 2024 killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. The original indictment charged four counts (see Document 22). On January 30, 2026 the court dismissed Counts Three and Four, holding the stalking counts are not crimes of violence (Document 103), and resolved the suppression motion concerning the search of his backpack (Document 102). On August 14, 2026, Mangione pleaded guilty to the two surviving stalking counts. A related New York state case is pending separately.

How this room works: every document here is the public version of record from CourtListener/RECAP and passed a four-step verification (QC-4) before placement: an automated sweep for protected categories (minors, juror identifiers, personal data, sealed material), a cross-check against the docket's own sealing and redaction orders, an independent fresh-eyes re-read, and a pre-release file verification. Summaries restate the documents and cite them; they add nothing that is not in the record. Sealed and restricted filings are never included.
